The National GP Induction and Refresher Scheme

Thinking of returning to General Practice?

The Induction and Refresher Scheme has been updated and relaunched - with the aim of making the process for GPs wishing to return to mainstream UK General Practice as smooth as possible.

This scheme is offered primarily to support UK and EU GPs who wish to work/return to work in UK General Practice.  The I & R Scheme offers up to six months full-time (or equivalent part-time) of reorientation and training back into current UK practice.  In some cases, GPs may be able to return to working as a GP after as little as 2 weeks reorientation into the role.

All I & R Doctors are placed in experienced training practices with an accredited GP Trainer.  We have been able to support many experienced GPs back into practice at a time when workforce numbers are falling in real terms.

Would you like to know more about the scheme?

  • Read our brand new guide
  • Further information can be found via the GP National Recruitment Office web site.  This gives details on scheme eligibility, assessments, how to apply etc.  May we remind you that it is your responsibility to ensure you are on the Performer's List before taking up a scheme placement.  Applications to the Performer's List can take between 6 to 12 weeks to process.

How to apply

You can apply through the NRO website link above but we recommend before you do to contact our Head of Continuing Practice, Dr Iain Lawther for a brief chat about your suitability for the scheme.
